if you don't want to pony up the money for the holley pan, which stock style pan would best fit a 72 and not hang way too low and clear stock steering without modifying the frame?

The F body is the only one that doesn't hang too low, but then you won't be able to steer, so you'll have to pay someone to hack it up to clear the steering.

The truck pan clears the steering but your Nova better be a gasser.

The Holley really is the best option.

Just to answer my own question so the next guy that stumbles down this thread knows...

I have an ls2 out of a trailblazer ss. I went with the f body pan and all the accessories (Windage tray, dipstick, dipstick tube, pickup tube) from Superior Chevrolet.

Everything fit fine with the exception of the pickup tube, that needed a little massaging. I was happy that I had ordered a new windage tray as the original was an 8 bolt and the one recommend in shorter and only uses 6 bolts. Installing the dipstick tube was as easy and just punching out the plug in the block.

Here's a pic of the the pan on the motor.

Question about oil pan

Hello, I am installing a 5.3 Chevy suburban engine into a 1955 Chevy belair. The original oil pan of that engine doesn't fit right because it crashes with the steering. What oil pan could I use, which one of which car would work?

Thanks for your help

That's gonna be a tri five forum question...this is a nova forum! Two completely different animals

I got this oil pan, Part Number 12640748, from a friend that installed an LS3 crate motor in a 67 GTO. New never used, complete with the pickup tube and windage tray. Will it work with a 5.3L in a 63 wagon using CBR front suspension? The deepest part will be farther forward so maybe clearance won't be an issue?

It is an inch deeper than the F body and 2" shorter than a truck pan. Will the stock 5.3L dipstick work with it? The biggest downside I see is the 8 quart capacity. Makes oil changes a little more expensive. I attached the f body pan dimensions for comparison.
It was free which fits my budget real good

It will definitely hit the crossmember at the front part of the sump. You don't want the sump to be more than 11,5" or so from the bellhousing.

No crossmember with the CBR set up.

Philip, that pan will work with the CBR suspension, but it will hang a little low. Matt had one on his 63 and scraped it a few times, he changed over to the F-body which is about as deep as the headers are, problem solved.

T,
Thanks Tom. How low is Matt's car? I would like to stay at stock height, as it sits now with the 23" tall tires, when it is all done.
