I am the proud owner of my late father-in-laws 1973 Nova he fully restored many years ago. He passed away unexpectedly in August of 2025 and has been truly missed. I love these cars from this era but I am by no means a mechanic or pretend to know what I’m talking about when it comes to working on them. I am wanting to learn everything I can about this car so I can keep it running for my father-in-law.

Hello and welcome. Im totally hearing you. In 1971 my parents bought their 1970 Nova. Until the 1990s it was driven by my Mother. It had found itself under a carport and barely moved since. My Mother had decided I would get it, if the day came. Well, it did 22 months ago and I have completely redone it from the ground up. I had been away from HotRodding for nearly 40 years, but got back on that horse quickly. Fortunately, I was able to find many of the ol schoolers from back them. I would gladly share thoughts and ideas with you. Lots of smart and helpful folks here.

Ok, other than oil change what should I start with in getting it gone through to make sure everything is in good working order. My goal for this car is to drive it, not a daily driver but something my wife, kids and I can jump in a couple times a week (weather permitting) and take out. I just did the thermostat last night.

Does it have mechanical gauges ? You can be aware of oil pressure and alternator charging and water temp. Does it fire up and run well ? If tires are good and everything works as it should, start/stop, you could do a short drive alone and possibly have a trusted local shop give it a look over. I wouldnt immediately do any suggested repairs without 2nd opinions. It would be good to have a trusted mechanic that could do a good look over. It looks very nice from pics. I know my Nova was tinkered with by numerous people. My father wasnt real car smart and thats why it mostly sat for over 30 years. It is a perfect car for you to learn. Simple enough to learn There are probably members close to you also.
