Hello, I have on my edelbrock carburetor, 2 throttle return springs that are one inside the other. One is a large diameter and one is a smaller diameter. The problem is that they are rubbing and catching on other movable parts around it on the carburetor as the springs move. Obviously this is not right so how do I fix this problem? Can I remove the larger diameter spring? Why are there 2 springs on the same thing anyway?

My carburetor is a edelbrock 700 double pumper. Would you suggest that I just take off the larger spring that is hitting everything? Why do I have 2 springs anyway? I have seen similar setups like mine with 2 springs one inside the other but cant figure out why they did that.

Yeah this is just how mine looks But my larger springs was hitting everything around it and getting caught on something that moved the flipper plates. Excuse my none technical terms here.. I dont know what its called! Every time I moved the throttle it pushed that metal piece too as well as a cable under it. As soon as I removed the larger metal spring and was left with only the smaller spring nothing is touching anything anymore. If I really do need both of them then Ill need to fabricate a bracket and put it on the forward part of the intake. But its driving fine like it is now without the larger spring. What do you guys recommend? Fabricate a bracket and stick it on the forward part of the intake? If so, Ill get working on it right away!

You could try building a bracket that would bolt to the front of the intake, then just run the spring from the top of the carb linkage to the bracket.

Kinda hard to see, but its just some thin bar stock that be bent, I also have a second spring on the bottom of the linkage going to the throttle cable bracket as a backup.

Return Spring Bracket

I also found the return spring made things a little "busy" behind the carburetor, so, I made a bracket from aluminum bar stock that bends down and bolts to the front of the head. I located a point on the aluminum bar stock where the double spring would have sufficient tension and drilled a hole at that point. The aluminum bar stock and springs look good.

I took off the second bigger spring this morning, so all I have on there now is the smaller diameter spring. Now nothing is touching anymore and everything is still working find and the throttle is returning just fine. I have seen people with a spring forward and attached to the intake and was looking at that also this morning. But all seems to be functioning ok like it is now. I went and test drove it and it drove just fine with great throttle response since the springs were not hitting anything anymore. Im pretty satisfied.

Here are some before and after pictures of the return springs. I have marked with arrows of what was being touched and what I think needs to be done to fix the problem. Where the springs attach to the bolt... If the bolt was longer, then I could move the springs further out away from the carburetor and they wouldn't touch anything. That would solve the problem. I also couldn't find a spot on the intake to attach a bracket to attach the springs to. SO, attaching the springs forward of the throttle lever doesn't seem plausible at this point because I cant find a spot for a bracket. Unless somebody can show me where to attach them to?!?!?! I also want to thank everybody for their help with this. Seeing your the pictures you guys have posted has been great. So, really thanx! One picture is of what it looks like with just the one spring and what I have done to the car, I took off the big spring so that nothing is touching, but just barely!!!! Just barely... and the other picture is of what it was originally and some typing and arrow editing of how I think what can be done to fix the whole problem in the first place. So, all the help I can get please guys!

I used to have a bracket that mounted on the forward most intake bolt on the driver side that you could attach the return springs to up to the carb and wouldn't touch anything. Cost like $5 or something at Advance Auto and worked just fine.

Running two springs is ideal, but I typically just run one. They make all different kinds. I try to get ones that a little stronger as the dual return spring setups have a weak smaller spring. You can get stronger single ones if you need it.

When I go to the track I switch to a dual spring setup so I can pass tech and be a little safer.

If you can get two on there it'd be ideal, but if you only run one make sure it's a strong one and it's hooked on there really good. Don't want that little spring to give out!
