............ American P T .......... = on 'center-line of the Trans housing'

then =

Post # 9 (doerf ) ...... his Shifter Unit = is "Off-set" ; look at that same "shifter mount plate" ..........
and , then his shifter unit ........... ' off-set' towards hump'

Post # 15 (doerf ) ...... His shifter unit IS MORE inside the (4 speed) HUMP .
............ Silver Sport Transmission .........

just my 2cents

Thanks for posting those pictures .

BOOM!

had same problem, I cut off some of the ears on casting that stuck out, I had make my own trans mount, at time no one made one, massage tunnel with large hammer, only cutting made was for shift hole, then fab a shift hump, good luck

Aren't all of the TKX the same regardless of supplier? Shifter supplied with kit should be only difference

A stock from the factory TKX can have the shifter placed in a few different positions
the position that matches a stock chevy II 4 speed position is accomplished with a custom adapter for shifter

It is silver sport that put the shifter position correct for the chevy II, not TKX

here is a better pic of top of tranny, the marks are the points where it was hitting tunnel, that plate that puts shifter to the left is from SST

I don't know what STX shifters in, maybe SST bought the shifter move kit

the exact position of shifter probably only matters if you are using a stock console

Hey doerf - - - - Thank you very much , for your "pictures : both the install pic (showing the "TKX (SST)"
shifter & "shifter HUMP" location , & the above pic " . . . .
plus , u'r info about on the 'sufficient 1st - 2nd gen " STX Shifters" (from SST) ..................... (y) .

all pictures here on SNS ARE Golden , for sure .

Makes a ' little more ' sense .

. . . later , jim

Ok now i understand about the hooked. and you are right, for what youve spent you shouldnt have to spend extra. I will call American pt about that because when i called and ordered the tranny kit they told me everything in the quote was specifically for the 66 with an LS and the 4 speed and hump.

I think you should. The pay later is a great deal, but not if they do not fully vet installs. They seemed to have a overly relaxed attitude when I showed the pics. The email was basically we see a problem. Good luck

I-am waiting on a reply as I stated they can take it back or make it right. Those are the options from me. I hope I am wrong on this one.

Agreed on those dang tabs! Trying to figure out if I can get them safely while in the car. You lucked out with your supplier, I am jealous!!

At least this will help some others in the future regarding the TKX.

Call SST, they may be willing to point you in the right direction as far as the shifter is concerned.
No go with SST. They do not sell the adapter and it needs case modification. Of note, I will be using a 4 inch offset, flipped over to give me a 90 degree from the shift turret“ in the center of hump”and adding a few inches of sheet metal. If you are buying this kit, I suggest looking elsewhere, unless you are willing to hack more. I have a feeling American used a modified, non virgin car for this kit.

Gotta do your homework. Unfortunately some of us learn the hard way. I'm getting pretty good at it,
Its unfortunate but sometimes lack of knowledge or even where to go to find it bites us, but just learn and move on

there is a saying in hang gliding...you wont live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, so better learn some from others

What is frustrating and unfortunate for some can be invaluable to others. Thanks to the members for your willingness to share for the benefit of others. Sadly, this day and time that's too often not the norm.

Lots of reading here…luckily my son is the pilot here on HRPT….so in a nut shell for the shifter to fit the factory 4-speed location and console you will need a custom shifter and mounting location. I am a dealer for Silver Sport transmissions and have installed them both ways…with the 4-speed offset and the standard up the middle location. The TXK has to be modified/machined to allow the 4-speed location to work PROPERLY…at the present time there is only one shop…that I am aware of making this modification…and I am a dealer for them.
Additionally we are the only ones making an LS to TKX cross member that is correct. This item is available but not listed on my web site yet.

Hopefully this information will help clarify some things for everyone.

A few years ago I went with a T56, I contacted american powertrain because they said they had a trans crossmember for that application. Called multiple times and asked for dimensions, even sent emails, they never responded or followed up. I ended up making my own. They may do transmission and kits well but they have terrible customer service.

General info - 1st gen trans humps were different from 2nd 66-67 4-speed humps. [Note - I made the original hump work for my 63 with Muncie 4-speed without mods.] I'm looking at Silversport TKX for a 66 wagon as well. Must fit factory 4-speed hump and console. I haven't heard of any necessary 4-speed console mods yet ?? I wish that SST had a template for floorpan mods or better yet - sheetmetal to patch on. I found a pix elsewhere on Steve's of TKX installled
