Located a 1972 Ford Maverick with a 302 V8 which has the (I believe) 9" rear end and was wondering if this is a good choice to replace the current stock rear end in my "63" wagon.

if it is a 9" then yes.. but could be a 8" dont recall the maverick's having the 9" but the 8" is still a very stout rear.. and if the width is right. then you should be fine...

the 8" and 9" look very similar

the 8" housing is flat across the top and bottom like this pic

the 8" case is like wise

The 9" requires a wrench or flex socket to undo the bolt under the pinion, the 8" can use a straight socket. You can actually notice this in the pic above, the 8" clearly shows the hole at the bottom right side of the pinion and the 9" can't be seen. This is the easiest way to tell them apart.

Guy wants $125.00 delivered (he is about 1 1/2 hours drive from me) and is throwing in the rear two Ford Maverick stock steel 14" wheels. Seems like a good deal but, haven't seen it in person. I think I'd be ahead with this one than trying to rebuild the stock rear and its pretty worn out to boot!

Thanks for the "Excellent" pictures and information, can always count on good people in here!

One easy way to tell an 8" from a 9" is the two nuts that secure the centersection to the housing under the pinion will require a box wrench to remove on a 9" but you can use a socket on an 8".

Rear end was delivered today and it appears to be a good builder. Also have located another Maverick 8" rear end about 85 miles from me for $100.00. Seems like it's either feast or famine when looking for parts.
