Dynamat or Similar for Roof Install???

Has anyone installed Dynamat of Fatmat or any of the other products on the underside of their roof (above the headliner)? Does it stay up there long term? Did you prep the roof with any spray glue or anything else? I don't want it falling down 6 months after I install my headliner. I was thinking of just using the Reflectix insulation they sell at Lowes (like bubble rap with a foil coating) on the roof because it is very light weight and would stay glued up for sure. But, Dynamat or a similar product would make for a quieter car. I am trying to make the car quiet for a more enjoyable ride and also insulated so my air conditioning will work better. Any and all ideas appreciated.

Dynamat by itself has a super aggressive adhesive, as long as you roll/press it into place it won't go anywhere. The only time I saw Dynamat fail was on some doors where the installer failed to roll the material.

Adding a spray adhesive = ? I would be concerned about a negative chemical reaction that would actually reduce the adhesive properties.

Good tips. With the regular Damplifier, (sorry to confuse it with Dynamat, but all butyl sound deadeners are similar) you'd have to double layer it to run into this problem. I had the cruddy factory tarpaper/asbestos-like liner material, which is about the same thickness as a sheet of Damplifier.

I've heard stories of people using sound deadener on roofs causing the sheet metal to warp after being heated.

Not sure if this is urban legend, or happens more on newer cars with thinner sheetmetal, but it made me think.

I was also thinking that the bows wouldn't flip up if the material was too thick.

i have dynamat extreme on the roof of my civic.i live in las vegas and the temps in the summer are insane.

it has never become unstuck. my whole car is done in that stuff every square inch.

i was sponsored long time ago by them in car audio competitions.i even have the foam liner that dynamat makes on top of that.

my thin hondas metal has never warped.as a matter of fact it is stronger.

you dont need to do every inch of your car like i did.but it does add weight to your car.

my car still gets hot in the summer. i still hear road nosie. but its alot better than before.

dynamat is really good stuff.you get what you pay for.

i had my car with a really big sound system.and it is rattle free.my windows wanted to pop out but my car does not sound like i have a trunk full of cans.

Quiet Ride Solutions

I just installed this pre-cut kit this weekend
Image

Here I taped it off to spray their glue(same as the 3M stuff) I added an additional 3sq. ft. of Dynamat to the roof from a door kit I havn't installed yet.Now I need more for the doors.
Image

The kit came as 2 mats.Had to cut the strips out for clearence, then tuck under roof bows.
Image

Finished install with edges taped(tape supplied in kit)
Install only took about 2hrs. with a friend(you only get one chance to set the mat in place with the glue on both surfaces!)

I used Second Skin Damplifier Pro on my roof and its been pushing close to 3 years now since I did the installation. It hasn't moved!! I cleaned it to get the gunk, dust, rust off but didn't go nuts with it, and then installed the mat by rolling it with a small roller. Its good stuff and the butyl adhesive sure is sticky!!

Dynamat or Second Skin are both good byutal based deaders that will not come off. I put second skin on mine a couple of years ago and it is still there. No special prep. Just make sure it is clean and dry.

The Second Skin will hold up to the underside of the car.

I put SecondSkin on my Beetle's roof last summer and it's holding up fine. If I have any leftover money when I do my Nova this summer I'll do the same

You have to keep it mind, you don't need %100 coverage with butyl mats. I can't remember what the percentage of coverage is supposed to be, but if you look at the pic Mike M posted it's not full coverage.

Thank everyone for all of your replies. I ended up ordering this stuff off of Ebay. 100 square feet. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/100-8...item2a051ab9d0 I should have enough to do the whole car, inside the doors, etc. It should be here in a few days. In the mean time, I am trying to finish up some more of my wiring. I have to get the inside of the car wired up and cleaned up so I can install this stuff. I'll post photos when the time comes.

It worked great! The stuff is SUPER sticky. If fact, its so stick, that you have to carefull when you install it. I was wearing some of those blue disposable gloves...........lets just say it took them right off my hands.

After I installed the mat, I used a layer of Reflectix (sp) available at Lowes. Its like bubble rap with foil on both sides. Not good for sound deadining, but should work to keep the temp inside the car cooler making my air conditioning work better.
