This morning in Central Mass the temp was hovering around the high 30's, which made me think about my engine swap project. I'm sure the motor has some anti-freeze still sittin inside the block, but what my concern is that if I dont get it together and anti-freeze in the block, do i risk the block cracking in the cold. Its in a garage, but unheated.

I'm no genius but since the cooling system is not a sealed system anymore wouldn't it be like freezing a half empty glass of water. it would just expand into the available empty space.

I can tell you from experience that you need to drain it and then pressure it up an blow it out w/air or put it in a place that wont freeze. Last year I put antifreeze in my engine circulated the H20 Pump for about 10 min. and it still froze and cracked. There was a small pocket of water on the lifter valley side of the #8 cyl and it cracked about 1 1/2 inches long on the lifter valley. Thus when the system was pressurized it would dump water into the pan.

From that point on it stays in my insulated garage where it wont freeze.
A lot of money later, I can say don't take a chance.
