I did mine last night. I pulled everything off (the bumper off of the shocks, then the shocks off the car). Then I bolted the bumper directly to the car. You can't use the plate with the four bolts again, you have to use normal bolts and figure out a way to hold them to tighten the other side.

Here are my pics with insufficient lighting in my garage. I took these when I had only two bolts on, I was using the jack to figure out how I wanted to space it out to make it look the best. It came out a fuzz different than it is here, but you get the idea.

I was wondering how you ended up holding the nuts and bolts and being able to turn them. I ran into that issue and ended up not doing mine, do you have to weld the bolts from one side? Thanks

1974 Bumper Tuck

I was wondering how you ended up holding the nuts and bolts and being able to turn them. I ran into that issue and ended up not doing mine, do you have to weld the bolts from one side? Thanks
I performed a bumper tuck about a week ago. I unbolted everything and the then removed the shock absorbers. I was a tad puzzled when I could not get the brackets to keep from falling back inside the bumper. I ended up using rubber bands to hold the brackets in place (by looping the rubber bands around the bolts adjacent to each other). With a little help I mounted the bumper to the frame and started the nuts. Once I had the nuts started I used a razor blade to cut the rubber bands and pull them out. (This modification literally cost me $0 and but an hour or two of labor).

I would assume that those handy plastic press-on washers would do the trick as well.

Hope this helps

Front bumper

Hi
I was looking at your car (nice) and I have also tucked in my rear bumper but mine originally came with a bumper molding, so I am left with all the holes in the bumper.

My front bumper is the same, if I send it out to re chrome, it's still going to have all the holes from the molding that I cant find anywhere.

So far, all that I did to the front was remove the air from the bumper shock, that still leaves a 2" gap

You say you installed a new 72 bumper on the front, it looks good, did everything line up, any complications ?

I would greatly appreciate your help on this one.

Answers for a 1974 Front bumper

Well the bumper is here, cost me close to $1000. but I now have a perfect, gleaming 74 front bumper without the holes for the molding.
Living in Northern Ontario, Canada, Shipping is always ridiculous

I have options, but could use your help
I could tuck this new bumper in, but then the sides look a little funny
They now make reproduction front fillers out of fiberglass at $299.
And I need to know what is the original space between the bumper and grill (mine is 2" )Did the 74 actually have more of a gap than that?

I really want this to look good, I have been waiting 4 years for that bumper.

Thanks Everyone

Well my car is in a million pieces but maybe this picture will help. I will also be getting the fiberglass filler for the rear. I don't like the way the bumper looks when against the rear unless the bumper is modified (cut) to be shorter on the sides to match the older (69-72) bumpers. The front is made of metal for the most part. Only the sides are plastic.

hello i'm new to this site i may not be doing this right but here it goes i have a 73 and i want to put 72 bumpers on it can this be done ??? i can be reached at a1muffler60@yahoo.com thx lee
The 72 rear bumper is different. Notice that the 73-74 bumper has a dip in the center while the 72 bumper is straight across.

Old Topic, but need input

The 74 front bumper topic has been going around for a while, But, Would the simplest way of installing a New bumper and tucking it in, would be to cut off 2inches or so of the existing mount (the shock) and then welding the mounting plates back on the end of the tubes.

Very important to me, please give me your input
Thanks

The exposed portion of the shock isn't long enough. Even with the shock completely collapsed, the bumper still sticks out to far, IMO. That's why I also had to relocate the bumper shocks on the frame about an inch to close the gap.

The best way would be to fabricate some new brackets, and get rid of the heavy bumper shocks altogether.

I'm in the same boat, I bought the glass fillers for the front and rear, they fit terribly, but are designed to be a "trim to fit" design. I think I may do a "half" tuck, all I want is the gap to be proportionate to the rest of the bumper fitment, cuz right now they aren't! So as I progress, I will share my pics, I think I may make a simple tin filler for the rear, after the correct amount of tuck is achieved, but I will make the filler look like it's a part of the body. The front may be a little trickier, I will use the glass pieces, but they will have to be modified, and then all three (yes, it comes in three freaking pieces!) pieces will have to be bonded together, and then fitted. I really want to shorten the bumper, but I purposely searched out bumpers with the impact strip, because I know it's going to look kickass on a silver car, with black stripes, but it doesn't lend itself well to modifying the impact strip. I will keep you guys up on what I'm doing, but first I have to find time to work on the darn thing. Spring always brings the best weather to work on the car, but also brings in the huge "honeydo" list.

You bought the fiberglass filler for the rear? I was going to buy these. Does not say anything about cut to fit. Do you have a pic of the filler?

You are absolutely right, it does not say anything about trim to fit, in the ad, but when you get it, it says right in the one paragraph installation instructions that you need to trim these to fit correctly. On the rear they actually make the rear with a nicely finished outer edge (the one that goes under the bumper, and you can't see), and the inside edge, that fits against the body is trimmed in straight cuts (oversized to the inside), so you can work it to fit the body. I think I do have some pics of it, If I can't find them, I'll go snap a couple for you (cars at my father in law's place).

So it has to be trimmed against the body... Cant you just use the original as a template? Than the fit would be like the original (Urethane Seam seal?). Is this why you say it fits terrible?
Yes I would like a picture or vid of it.
EDIT: I'm referring to the rear only and not the front. Just wanted to clarify so you know which I'm referring to.
