I have a 3782608 water pump on my '65 SBC car that I would like to keep so I decided I'd spend an hour, that ended up being two days, looking for a rebuild kit. The only kit I could find was for a 1958-1964 SBC Short Pump. BUT NOT A '65. There is no top boss or hose fitting on this water pump like is seen on some later pumps. Does anyone know what the difference is between the '64 and the '65 pumps?
Or a source for a rebuild kit for the '65? Thanks

Cowboy John looks like my kindda folks for sure. He's gonna be in Moultrie, Ga in November so I'll probably see him there.

Ended up calling Zip-Corvette and gave them my pump number and also told them it is a short pump from a '65 chevy Nova and he said this was the correct kit so it's on the way.

I was thinking the ones on RockAuto are replacement pumps. They just show the number of the pumps theirs will replace. Am I wrong?

I wanted to keep my correctly dated pump.

I have only rebuilt one pump, but it was for a John Deere auxillary engine for one of our water wells. Can't remember where I bought the kit, but it was in Houston.

They wanted $900 for a new pump and I rebuilt this one for less than a hundred bucks, that was including the two thermostats also and new shaft with bearings. I measured distance from impeller to pump housing and from front pump housing to pressed on pulley. I did this pump about 20 years ago and it's still going strong today. Don't use it much, but I do exercise this engine every month.

I'm still curious as to why some of the websites that offer rebuild kits for the short pump stop at 1964. They make it seem like there is a difference in the water pumps after that year. The following probably makes that a moot point anyway.

On the topic of rebuilding a pump, I couldn't find a July 20th episode on the PowerNation/Detroit Muscle website or any other site. The website did lead me over to the link you have for ZIP Corvette but their "How to rebuild" link was down. 404 error. I've found another great source for water pump rebuilding info.

Here is some info that I've found out about Short/Long pumps and dates. This came from Summit.

What's the difference between a Chevy short water pump and a long water pump?
The following information was found in our Edelbrock catalog.

"The difference is the length of the hub.

Chevrolet used a short water pump on small block passenger car engines from 1955-68, 1969-70 350 Corvettes, and 1955-72 light duty trucks. The dimension from the engine block surface to the water pump hub is 5 5/8". The pilot shaft diameter is 5/8".

Long water pumps were used on small block passenger cars engines from 1969-87 and on 1973-86 light duty trucks. The dimension from the block surface to the hub is 6 15/16". The pilot shaft diameter is also 5/8".

However, 1971-82 Corvettes have a short water pump with a larger 3/4" pilot shaft. Do not mix and match pulleys from short and long water pump engines because this will cause pulley misalignment. If you can fit your hand between the water pump and the block, You have a long style water pump."

As you can see the 55-68 PC, 69-70 Corv. and 55-72 LDTs used a short pump with 5/8" shafts. This leads me to believe that the ZIP 56-70 283/327/350 Water Pump Rebuild Kit would be the one to buy for early model short water pumps.

I'll give them a try as water pump places I have contacted want around $110 + $35 shipping. Rebuilding myself is worth a try for $50 + shipping.
