Took the nova to a friends exhaust shop (he owns and operates a meineke) to have him install a 3" exhaust with X pipe and 2 chamber thrush welded mufflers (flowmaster 40 series clone). Call him around 1 and he said come and get it, it is ready and sounds fantastic. I think GREAT! So I get there and he tells me the mufflers had the wrong inlet/outlet and he had to reverse them and that doing so is fine because he has done it tons of times with no issues.

Now a little background on him. He is no dummy. His procharged small block LT1 camaro put down 745 to the rear wheels and he has been around race cars and hot rods for a long time. Anyway I think to myself "great it is going to sound like @**** and be super restrictive and I will end up having to get the correct mufflers for it". Went out and started it up and it sounded like a 40 series should except quieter than I expected. I figured the quieter part was from the X pipe. I take it out and romp on it hard and it gives me that X pipe indy car sound and sounds really good and I didnt notice any power changes.

Anyway would you have been pissed about this? What would you have done? Would you get the correct mufflers with the correct inlet/outlet and have him take the old ones off and put the correct ones on or just leave it alone?

Based on the images I have seen of Flowmaster internals, it would seem that you'd be introducing a significant flow restriction into the system by installing them backwards. Pressure waves are going to get kicked back upstream if the pic below is correct.

Here's a pic from their website:

i'd

have him put a flange in the system so you can quickly uncap it ,, so when you really want all it has , its there ,,

the flows have an inlet and outlet for a reason

ya spend that kind of money ,, u wanna feel good about what you've spent ,

does it give u that sick feeling knowing its not exactly how u wanted it ?

Got the mufflers with the correct flow direction and took them and the car over. He got defensive and said "3 inch exhaust will support up to 1000hp so a slight restriction should make no difference plus you guys got the wrong mufflers" I said "You had my cell phone number you should have called me before you put them on backwards" then the subject changed to a chevelle he had there and it smoothed over. I walked in the shop with him to give him my number again and the guy that works for him was talking to my dad and said "He gets offended and offensive about his work very easily plus I told him when he was doing it that they shouldnt flow backwards and he said it would be fine so I ended the conversation there so I wouldnt get in a fight with him".

Anyway he is putting the new ones on the right way today. Should sound better. The backwards 40 series was pretty quiet and we all know 40 series are not quiet mufflers!

Just got it back. I knew X pipes quiet exhaust down some but I never knew that much! The new mufflers installed correctly sound a little louder and a hair deeper but over all not much difference in sound. I had 3" 40 series on my camaro with an H pipe and it was WAY louder. So the X pipe quiets it down quite a bit! At least I know the restriction is what it should be with the mufflers installed correctly.

Piss poor quality video and sound but here it is cruising home.
