trying to decide what i'm going to do with a new set of AFR 195's i got a deal on..would it be counter productive to put these on something like a new 290hp crate and swap out the cam and intake?? I'd like to make at least 400hp without spending 6k..

I'm doing the same thing basically, to a 260hp crate. Pro-Filer 64cc-195 heads, Lunati 60103 cam, RPM intake, 750 Quick Fuel "Slayer" carb, 1 5/8 full length headers, Pypes 2 1/2" exhaust kit, etc, etc. I hope it works. :stir:

I think the 290 hp 350 has dish pistons. If this is the case, and your 195's have 74 cc chambers, compression would be 8:1 or less with a composition head gasket. I'd probably install a smaller cam than you have to try to retain some bottom end power. Something like the Isky 270 mega with 1.6 rockers would work surprisingly well.

With dished pistons and 76cc heads, both the 260hp&290hp are 8.5:1. With a 64cc chamber and a good head gasket, we should be @ 9.5:1+.

I'll see what the price of a 290 crate is at my dealer, would probably put a lunati cam in it with a air gap and a 750 carb..i have a line on a 1 piece block thats machined 30 over just needs to be clearenced if i want to go with a stroker..500 for the block..probably 1200 for a scat rotating assembly,,shop wants 1500 to balance and assemble,700 for roller cam and lifters plus the 1000 i paid fot the heads i'd be close to 6k,,,ugh

Summit with free shipping has proven to be cheaper than our local dealership and the dealership was even including our company discount. Go figure, maybe some dealership like Scoggins Dickey can get you a better price than a regular GM dealer.

My setup is based on a stock 350 short block (comparable to the crate engine). I dont know the exact numbers it puts down, but I can tell you it moves.

Stock 4 bolt main 350 Short Block (Everything was blown apart, cleaned and checked good. Block was tanked and honed)
Comp Cams Xtreme Energy Hydraulic Flat Tappet 274/286, .487/.490 Cam and Lifters
Comp Cams Magnum 1.52 Roller Tip Rockers and Pushrods
Edelbrock E-tec 64cc/170cc Assembled Aluminum Heads (9.5:1 compression)
Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Vortec Intake Manifold
Edelbrock 750 Electric choke Carburetor

Bolt them on then. Nothing rediculous at all. You'll easily make your 400 hp goal using the existing cam. 1.6 rockers on the intake would help.
I dont think the stock cam would make 400 hp. Those lobes are tiny. Heads and cam need to work together more so than any other 2 components on an engine.

The 290 hp cam is 222° @ 0.050" and 0.480" lift with 1.6 rockers. It would make good power on a 350 with AFR 195's.

If you're just going to swap out the cam anyways, the base Goodwrench 350 (#10067353) is the exact same engine as the 290HP/350, but with the old 929 cam for less bucks.

I actually plan on doing what you are proposing. I would even settle for the 260hp engine as it is cheaper. JEGS and Summit have the best prices and free shipping.

Good heads for under 1g and a roller conversion kit with a good intake and you can call it a day.

I read a review in either CC or HR for heads under 1k and there were plenty that bumped the 290 over 400 HP.

Good price for a fresh GM block. Given today's technology, you can no longer sell me on the Seasoned Block argument. Go new and enjoy.:D
