whiny inline

my 250 in my 63 has that whiny gear drive sound to it . i know the cam drive is gear driven ,but i would think it should be quiet. i've done a bit of cyber shopping and the 2 sets i've seen , one has aluminum gears and the other has a steel crank gear with a composite cam gear. is one better / quieter than the other ? if i change the gears should i also change the thrust bearing ?

IIRC, the fiber/composite ones are junk. I think I read that on inliners.org or in the Santucci book.
The original is a fiber cam gear, the aluminum ones are aftermarket. The stock fiber gear is going to be a lot quieter, but like 65 said, they aren't the best for longevity. I would be willing to bet that someone put an aluminum gear in at some point and that's what you're hearing.
It to sounds more like someone Installed a Unmatch set of gears. And the teeth are not meshing right.Another thing that can cause this same type of problem,is when a alum gear is not heated before installing it.It can and WILL start walking off the end of the cam.Another thing is to mech.fasten the gear after it has been heated & pressed onto the cam.
Do you have a power glide transmission? They have a very normal but loud whine.

i did have a powerglide but swapped in a th350. i thought for sure it was the glide making the whine also . but the whine was still there after the swap.

so if i go with another aluminum gear will it whine also ? i love the sound of gear drive .....as long as it's not mine !!

this is the route i was thinking . it's not the original engine (hence a 250) so my thought was possibly a broken fiber gear at one point and just the cam gear got replaced with an aluminum one.
A fiber gear set will not whine.I have run the Alum gears sets for yrs.and I have never had a set whine. At least Not that i have ever heard anyway.
