I believe the S/S Mopar guys started that in the 60's. The plates along with a big pinion snubber was the extent of their traction control.
Your video proves how well they work!

They also made specific springs for the S/S applications. There was a left and right spring and they were specified for the weight of the car. The right spring had more leaves than the left one, and there were additional half leaves in the front. Having raced a Mopar in the 60's I thought these would adapt well to my 67 Nova, so I put a set of 3000# springs in the rear, and a pinion snubber on my 9" rear axle. It worked amazingly well.
