Finally got the nova sort of done and to the track a few weeks ago. First ever pass in the car. Ran it on hard street tires, (like i said sort of done) spun the tires through first and most of second gear. Car is ladder bars on leafs with an alston front clip 9" ford with 4.56. 28" tall tire (slicks I bought 29/9 mt et drag are 27.4) 400 small block .040 over home ported 292 heads, vic jr. intake, 850 dbl pumper, 11.4 comp, 1.6 rockers, comp cam 282 290 adv duration 244 252 @ .050 .520 .540 lift 110°. Turbo 400 with b&m 3600 stall (that only stalls about 2200 go figure) My problem is the car was pulling good in high gear then just quit and fell over, when I looked down the tach was at 7000 and I still had 100-150 feet (guess) to go and I was on the rev limiter. Don't want to turn this thing much further so a gear change is in order. What gears should I get? Did the math on the convertor slip and it is around 8%. Plan on putting a brake and the bottle on it in the future so would like to not have to do this again. So I guess my question is 3.90 or 4.11 I am new to the drag race thing so any help would be appreciated. Here are the numbers from my time slip (only got one pass threw the fan belt, I hate rushing and not being prepared:mad:.)
I1-2.247
I2 5.850
I3 8.560
mph (I3) 93.110
I4 10.857
et 12.803
mph 117.711

thanks Aaron

if your going to stay with your 29/9 or a 28" tall tire with the bottle i would sugest nothing higher than a 4.10. i ran a 4.10 with a 28/9 and traped at 6600 rpm and 122 mph out the back on a 150 hit. if you plan on going bigger than that on the kit i would go with a 3.73 or the 3.90. if its going to live on the jug when at the track i think you would be happoer with the 3.70's.

+1

on a 125 shot last fall i spun about 7500 through the quarter at 124. that's with 4.56 gears and a 28" tall tire. almost all my racing is eighth mile, but if i go quarter mile with a bigger hit i'm gonna have to go back to my 3.73's.

A 30 over 400 = 406 those motor dont like to rev to 7000,I had a 406 for years before switching over to a big block. 6000 is what they like and a 4.56 is way to much gear for it,if your going to use the bottle.

wait for mike morgan to chime in here. he has a lot of interesting experience with small blocks that shouldn't rev high...

it all depends on the combo. we built a camaro with a 406 that builds power up high and it traps at 7800. you know your car the best. everyone of us have a different take on this. here is a site were you can play with some numbers and see what you want.

hope this helps

my 400's have no problems spinning past 7,000. The real issue is that is the motor actually making power past 7,000? Is there a need to rev it that high if it's hurting not helping? Your combo with the 292's and IMO a small cam if its getting to 7,000 and its laying down its probably all its got. I would drop the gear to 4.11 and see what it does. My combo would spin 6600 thru the traps with a 29" tire and 4.11's and 7400 on the bottle.
