Water pump to radiator hose

167 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Ernietech
found a coolant leak, after chasing it for a long while i found it. seems when i replaced the water on my 1967 I6 250, the hose to the radiator is VERY tight fit on the water pump. what makes it even tougher is getting the hose clamp on straight.
seems i am hitting the top side of the timing cover on the bottom. this keeps me from getting a straight clamp and no matter how tight i get it.... it drips.
much worse after it gets hotter.
the pump and hose appear to be the correct parts, and not sure it was like that before i owned it. does anyone have any magic to make this easier / better way.
maybe i'm missing something.

Thanks all,
Lee

Hey Lee ,

are you still using u'r L 6 engine . . ? I ask because, I have never had any kind of a water leak = in that area (or anywhere) ; using both a stock lower '250 radiator hose' & a
stock L 6 water pump.
That being said . . . . it's not very much trouble too "remove the 'lower' hose" & give that area a really good look. Then, I'm using those 'screw type hose clamps' , also (with no
problems) .
Could there be some kind of "casting" on the water pump outlet ; causing th' issue . . ? - just asking ? Maybe a very small crack somewhere ?

ps - I do coat the inner lip on all my radiator hoses (just use a small drop (or two) of motor oil . . . so when you tighten down your hose clamp . . . the clamp will "seat the hose
easier onto the w/p outlet.

It would be worth it too remove your lower hose and give that a really good "inspection" (thinking there could be a small cut / or / crack in the rubber .
(just a guess . . . . then by tightening u'r hose clamp . . . the water can escape) . A small crack = that opens up as you tighten the clamp.
Even a new lower Hose , would be cheap insurance ; from having any leak / or being 'stranded along th' road.

Please , give us a follow-up about what fix , you do .

later , jim
