whats the best set of vortec heads available? and will they work on older smallblocks. my friend says there is a set that have 062 casting number and they are the best...he said to look for the 3 triangles on front of head.

freind is correct. Although gmp now sells a set of vortec heads that are better, 2.02 valves, studs for larger cam options and port and polish. still great heads tho if you go with the 062.

look at chevys 185 and 225 cc vortecs , patriots vortec heads look decent , RHS pro torker with the 2.02's look good ,

and yes they will fit older small blocks you also have to change to a vortec type manifold and i believe you also need to get center bolt valve covers or get the adapter to go to peramiter bolt pattern

Ditto on the above comment. I`m about to put a set of the better 062`s,[bigger valves,higher lift springs etc,], on an GM crate 350 thats about 2yr`s old.

there are many Vortec heads available and yes they will bolt to older engine with no issues.

there are some GM performance parts heads that are outstanding.

Vortec heads do use a different bolt pattern for intake.

GMPP does make a Vortec Bowtie head that has the dual pattern for Vortec or early std intakes & early or late model valve covers.
