I have read to set initial timing with out the vac adv hooked up. I really don't know where to set it before it vac is hooked up. I know my can pulls about 12 degrees. I need some help. I also think my vac is advancing at idle is that normal or do I need to adjust it some how?

disconnect the vacuum line from the advance and plug the line going to the carb... set your timing. reattach the hose and now take it for a drive. if it needs to be advanced another degree or two come back in and give it a little more. depending on the components, and no two engines are alike, it may want a little more than possibly 12°. test it. if you have a std style vacuum advance there is no adjustment although you can limit the amount of degrees of advance...
