Would buying a 8.5 (cut to fit) 4.88's and a posi (stock axles) for $500 be better than buying a strange 33 spline axle & spool for my 8.2 with 3.08's? The cost is about the same ($600 for the strange setup)
I have an 8.5" with stock posi, 3.73 gears, Moser 28 spline axles, and a girdle cover. It has held up with zero problems so far. Quickest 60' has been a 1.43 in my 3550# street car.
I also have an 8.2" with stock posi and 3.73 gears. Several years ago I broke a spider gear in the 8.2". I was facing the question of buying a new posi unit for the 8.2" or buying new gears for my 8.5". I went with the 8.5", and I still feel like it was the better choice. If you use your 8.5", you can upgrade to aftermarket 28-spline axles when you collect another $250-$300. Then you will have the best of the two choices. Also, I would much prefer a posi over a spool if you drive it on the street any.
Just checked & it seems I have one of each. I think the 8.5 came under a Camaro....not sure.
Dynamite info on that site. Had been there before, but had forgotten about it. Again, thanks for the info.
Just bought a '66 that has a full width 9" Ford housing with a set of 35 spline Strange Axles. Want to save the 9" for a Gasser project I'm working on & put a stock type axle under the '66 to use as a cruiser.
