Torque converter fluid?

1748 Views 15 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  bulldoguk
Im about ready to put my new TH350 in, but I've got a quick question..

Does it matter if the fluid in the tq converter and the fluid in the transmission are different? I was planning n using B&M trick shift, if that matters.

Thanks
Eric

Don't waste your money on Trick Shift.

Just use regular ATF.
I'm gonna try some amsoil trans fluid soon. But mixing should be fine as long as the old trans didn't grenade and leave frags.

X2 If the shifting is still to soft get a adjustable modulator. Make sure you have good vacum. Or use frod trans fluid. RICK
As far as I know it has an adjustable modulator, and youre suggesting I stay away from trickshift? Alright. Any particular brand thats best? I use royal purple oil, ill check if they have ATF
Just use regular "run of the mill" ATF.

Synthetics do more harm than good in a transmission.

Just pick up some WallyWorld ATF and be done with it.
If the trans is still out look in the modulator where the vacuum line goes. If you see a flat screw head then it is adjustable. As far as trans fluid goes cheap stuff works just as good as the expesive stuff long as you're trans temps aren't to high. Anything above 190 F you will need a cooler and or a deeper aluminum pan. I was planning on running a cooler anyway. My lines are junk too, so I need to bend new ones. Might as well add the cooler now.

Also, is brake line suitable for tranny line?

And you mean a little brass screw? yup, got it.
No brake line is too small. I think it should be 3/8 od. The screw is correct.
Usually Type F(yes Ford) for a performance trans. is what I have seen recommended and is what I run.

I don't waste my money on synthetic anything.
5/16" ID. The kits from Bow Tie Overdrives are real nice. stainless lines from the trans to the front of the engine, braided stainless to the cooler.
Installed some a customers car a few months ago.

I think you're referring to steel line found in parts stores. Yes, it'll be fine as long as you get the proper diameter.

True!

I've always ran "Type F" tranny fluid until my latest 700R4. On this one they did not want me to run Type F, They told me to run Dextron III.

Yeah, thats what I meant, the generic line. Ill go with stainless either way though. I dont mind bending it myself.

Type F? Ill look around for it.
Type F doesn't have the friction modifiers that Dexron III has. I wouldn't bother using type F unless its a racing application and you're looking to take a tenth of a second off your ET.
Yeah, she has yet to see the track, but it will happen eventually. She's still my daily though.
I'd stick with what it was designed to run then, Dexron. I just use the cheap stuff from Walmart, just the same as anything else, IMO.
