I have a 327 with a mild camshaft. Problem being at idle (750 rpm) the timing reading is 40 degrees. The car runs good at this setting. When I adjust timing to 13 degrees it runs terrible. Timing cover has a spot welded pointer and the balancer is approx. 7 inches in dia. Any and all info. would be helpful.

I don't thionk it is possible to get 40* advance at idle with vacuum disconnected....somethings sounds funny. Are sure the distributor is in correct...??? is the timing tab damaged....??? different damper..??? it doesn't make sense to me...

I agree...I am getting a "false" reading. The harmonic balancer probably not more than 50 hours on it. When no. 1 piston is at top dead center the timing mark on the balancer is also at tdc. I am puzzled.

is the balancer degreed? or are you using a dial advance timing light? Do you have MSD? I've heard not to use a dial advance timing light with MSD. is the timing pointer spot welded to the timing cover like stock? and you say the mark on the balancer lines up with the 0 mark on the pointer @ TDC? did you verify true TDC when the motor was assembled?
