Hey guys my car over heats (230) when I'm in traffic. I have heard if my timing had too much advance that could be a cause. I was about 7-8 over so I brought it down to around 1-2 over. My question is what does this do to performance and do I need to tweak anything else when I do this? The car seems to be running fine but the idle dropped a bit...at least it seem that way to me. I will see tomorrow if that helps with the overheating. I have changed the thermostat (180) so I should be good. Next would be to change the hoses as I'm not sure when they were replaced last, but they look good. Next would be maybe an electric fan or a aluminum radiator.

Justin, you need to find out what your total timing is. Your inital should be between 8-12 depending on your curve in the distributer. I run my timing locked out at 38* with no overheat or starting issues. If you need any help let me know.NPHNP:yes:

Generally speaking, less ign. advance makes the motor run hotter. More ign. advance (to a point) helps the motor run cooler.

Sounds like I should put it back to 8-12 then.

Ya I will, I mis-understood... I thought if you had to much advance it would run hot. Going to mess with this tomorrow. FastEddie gave me some tips and he will come over and help me out if I can't figure it out...I'm sure I will, but to good to know I have someone close to help me out. Thanks!
