Taking front springs out for replacement and found this in between two coils. I'm guessing it's to stiffen the spring?

Twist-loads from the 70's-80's. They are there to correct sagging springs and help level the car (or raise the front). They work great "static" but drive fast over a hill where the front spring extends more than normal and they fall out.

They used to be called "steering stabilizers" Sears Automotive would install them, with only $20 added to a wheel alignment job.
