once the shifter is mounted, draw an imaginary line, or use something short, that will show angle of cable as it passes through the floor... the cable needs to stay in somewhat a horizontal angle so the hole for the cable will be an elongated or oval hole... the cable, as it transitions towards the transmission, in most cases, makes a loop... the length of cable should be adjusted ONLY after you've adjusted the cable/shifter assy for proper function. the instructions will show detailed installation & adjustment procedures.

the is no set length, install and adjust accordingly... make real sure the cable moves through the casing freely, no snagging, twists or too tight of bends causing binds...

Should use a 5' cable for most cars unless the shifter is sat way back. The 5' cable is what they come with.

Thanks for the responses. I got the info I needed and picked up a cable. (I got the shifter used so I didn't have a cable)
