Ok well I sandblasted my subframe which took off most of the flaky rust. I was looking for methods of either converting or removing the rust. I was considering naval jelly but I wasnt sure if that would be the best method.
Can anyone recommend some good chemicals to treat rust?
If you are looking to seal up the pores, now that you have all the loose stuff off I have heard alot of good responses from users of the Por-15 paint. I havent used it myself but it sounds like a durable coating. That would be my plan. JR
Get as much off as possible then consider Master Series silver to seal it.
I've used it and have been very happy with it. Also its has a lot of aluminum
in it to help fill the voids. And drys with a tooth so your paint or whatever
has something to bite on. Reasonably priced around $29. quart and I think
their website is nomorerust.com or close to that. And now back to the
forums
That Master series stuff is great! I have some that I am going to use. I quickly brushed a spot on a rusty floor pan last year, and it is still there with nothing coming through. And I didnt even prep that spot beforehand. I used POR 15 and it is good also, but I think I like the Master series stuff better. Check out thier website.
POR-15...just use an etching primer while it is tacky and you can paint right over it no problem. Two coats POR-15 recommended and then either use their top coat products or a primer while still a little tacky. I swear by this stuff!
ive used the permatex stuff on my rear wells and it turns the rust black, you could also paint the frame afterwards with appliance epoxy paint, its great for a nice hard gloss black finish.
