Rubber spacers between seat and track?

220 Views 10 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  JIMS63s
I'm getting ready to reinstall the front buckets on my '63 SS. There were hard rubber spacers between the front end of the track and the seat. Longer, factory looking, bolts were installed there also. Has anyone seen this before and are they supposed to be there or could this have been a dealer installed spacer? I know it's a personal choice item but I'm going to leave them out if they're not factory installed. See pics.

So, no one has ever seen these spacers?
These spacers had to have been installed at the Oakland factory OR within the first 5 years, since I've owned the car for the last 55 years. If the bolts weren't so much like the rear bolts, I would be sure they were aftermarket.
I guess my question is: of all the bucket seats you have seen, were the tracks bolted directly to the seat frame without spacers?

i couldn't say yes or no. but maybe the first owner had the dealer install them just to get a little more lean back in the seat. maybe was a guy on the taller side.
Could be dealer installed. The owners manuals say to see your dealer if you need more seat adjustment.
Thanks for your opinions, guys!
Anyone else know for sure about this?
asked this question on the forum myself a few times, as they are on my '63 seats, though they were at all four corners of my seat tracks.. my seats are originally from a Tempest, though, but they are the same seat as Chevy II. they are factory.

somehow lost one during disassembly and made a new one from a tire skin, roughly same thickness.

Nobody in their right mind would use rubber spacers on a seat mount. Rubber flexes, the more it flexes the greater chance of inducing fatigue. Fatigue leaks to stress cracking. Stress cracking leads to component failure. So no, rubber was not installed by a dealer. At least not a good one. They were installed by some hack. If you want to raise the front of the seat, use some steel or aluminum spacers that will not flex. Also will not distort as you tighten the components. Those spacers are a complete misuse of the material.
No never seen that on ANY gen 1 or 2 Nova

tell that to GM--these bushings are mostly found on BOP vehicles. the Pontiac at guys at Carlisle knew about them, they are indeed factory. not your typical spacer, either. calling them "rubber" is being kind. they are very stiff.

rubber is everywhere in these cars next to metal (strut rods, sway bars, shock towers, etc), and when it wears out, you replace it.

btw, my seats, tracks an associated hardware show no sign of fatigue. and the bushings are fine. no need to fear this JIMS63s. they do provide a slight boost for those that need it, too. i am tall and prefer them without, but personal preference.

Does the 1962 Shop Manual (and/or the '63 supplement) have any information on this? The '63 assembly manual doesn't have much info on seats.

Bob
Thanks for the info, guys!
I'm going to find some shorter bolts and leave them out and see how it sits. I thought it sat fine before and didn't know they were in there. I was much younger then though, lol.
