Yes I've heard of this but I wouldn't do it either. When we Drag raced people use that or wd-40 behind the rear tires to help clean off the rear panel.
What I do is go on down to the hardware store and pickup a section of nylon bug screen. Cut it to fit the front of the car, as you desire, leave enough material on the top half to wrap over your rad cowl and cut a hole/s to match your hood pin/s, close the hood, and the screen is secure. Leave the bug screen drapped over the outside and the wind will keep it there. The screen not only protects your rad but your grille, and anything else you want to cover. When your done with it, wash it off and store for the next cruise, or throw it away and do it all over again the next time.
