Repairing prior frame cut out?

4097 Views 30 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  EARLYIIS
Someone cut the frame section near the steering column on my car prior to my purchasing it. How would you go about fixing it? Should I get a patch from another car and weld it in?

Here's a picture to show what I'm talking about.

Wow I've trimmed about a half inch down by the bolt area but yours is cut up pretty bad. If it was me I'd do exzactly what you said and get one from another car.
Patch it or get a new one(s)? Think dii make replacements.
Its cut pretty bad, the top section and the bottom aren't even attached any more. I ant for the life of me, figure out why someone would remove so much metal in this area. Would you drill out the spot welds on the firewall and replace that entire top section, or would you just clean up the cut and strictly patch it?

I would drill out the spot welds and put a whole new piece in but be careful to put it back in the same place or your car will lean
You can get some here or I am sure other places.

Might make an alignment jig off the other side, before cutting it off to know where to center the new or used piece or part so its same as it was plumb wise.

i wouldn't get a patch, nor the frame rail bracing as posted... i'd patch it with a scrap piece of material.

look behind that piece. there doesn't seem to be any distortion, no bends or cracks in the metal. it appears that section was trimmed for what reason we'll never know but it appears to me a simple cardboard template cut to fit into the hole, trimmed to fit just right... transfer it to metal and cut it out and weld it in.

looks to be a small repair... in regards to the lines not matching up... the line not matching runs around the curl. the piece that would match up he removed...

to me it doesn't look like a big deal. just make sure to patch/repair it with the same gauge of material.

just my :2cents:
I agree with Flyer.

I think he is onto something too! Replacing this piece is not within my price range I don't believe. The car drove good and straight before and ran 7.60's in the 1/8th on motor, so I dont think it really impacted the rigidity of the car. But, I dont want any problems down the road, and this area wont be hidden by the fenderwell headers that I ran with the 383.
i see no reason you'd have any problems patching it...
I am cutting a car up right now, if you want I can see if my car is donor worthy.

Be on the lookout for a PM! :D
UPDATE

I started looking at the firewall a little closer and I'm starting to get a little nervous. I have edited my picture highliting the area in question. Does anyone have a picture of this area of their firewall? I seem to have a crease that is 1-1.5" long right behind where the cutout section is/would be.

It seems pretty odd that this is the only area that LOOKS buckled. I would imagine that if things had shifted, I would see some damage on the old subframe and the other side of the firewall of this cut up plate.

Here is some shots of my 62 2 door sedan. It is on my wooden body roller which blocked me from getting a straight on shot. Hope they help.

Thank you!

It looks like my firewall was pushed in for some reason. Now I just have to decide how I am going to repair the situation. I will post some better pictures of the damage tomorrow. Hopefully some of you will have some good ideas of what steps need to be taken.

Here are my updated pics! I have an ad in the wanted section describing what I THINK I need.

i'd go ahead and repair the cut out area and fix the notch also (if that suits you)

other than that it wouldn't concern me in the slightest, it's not an "Important" item...
Looks line someone pried a screw driver in that spot - maybe when they cut out the section that is missing - but hey - we'll never really know for certain... But does not look too bad.
i also would patch/repair it and affected area.im thinkin things would be more out of plumb if the section was totally cut out and replaced.
