I want to remove the ammeter from my car and replace it with a volt meter. My question is, once the ammeter wires pass through the firewall, where do (should) they go? The wires on this car are so well wrapped it is really tough to trace them.

Normally the wire used is the wire that runs from the alternator to the battery. It's a good move to get ride of an ammeter they are dangerous because of the current potential of the wires. You can use a shunt to measure current that doesn't have the same potential. A voltmeter it a much better option.

Do the reverse of this and you should be OK... I agree with Nova Guy I find Ammeters useless and with a 10 wire gauge unsafe. So much safer to run a voltmeter. Hope this helps.

Some ammeters were full flow while others went through shunts. The ones with shunts could have the shunts under the hood or just about anywhere.
It might be some work but it might be best to strip out the old wire and do it right. You might also find other things that were covered up that need attention.

When you wire up the new volt gauge, put a fuse in it where you are getting power for it and also make sure you have a solid ground connection.
