Questions with transmission

1892 Views 18 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ajc5633
I have a guy on graigslist by me selling a power glide for $200 and a built but never ran turbo 350 rated for 800hp for $400.

This sounds cheap for this turbo 350 so I wanted to ask you guys/girls opinion. My thoughts are he is a racer getting out of it of something like that for that price since that's somewhat common around me.

What kind of questions should I ask?

I just had a 350 trans built to handle 550hp and i payed 350.00 and that was cheap so yes that seems real cheap!
Ask him what parts are in the trans. To handle 800 hp you would need extensive mods done to the trans. Aftermarket sprags, drums and possibly an input shaft. Clutch mods done to get more clutches in the trans etc. IMO if it does not have an ultrabell on it then it is not gonna handle 800 for long so beware of his claims. JMO
Ok. That is what I was looking for. I don't know enough about transmissions to know what it would have to have. Thanks. I did ask him what was done to it to make it handle the 800hp so hopefully I get good news back.

I won't be running that much power through it. Probably no more than 550 but it would be nice to know I can run more if I choose without breaking something there.

What gears are in the Powerglide, I'd be interested in that......looking for 1.76
I can ask him if he ever gets back to me. He hasn't answered my email yet.

He didn't know much about the powerglide when I called him.

He only knew some information on the turbo 350. He bought a few transmissions off someone and he planned on using one of them in his truck. He wound up scrapping the truck do to no time so he is selling off transmissions. He had 2 high hp ones and he sold one and he said this is the last one and it's the stronger of the 2 he had. He took the pan off and said he doubts there was ever fluid through this trans after rebuild. He told me it is a short tail shaft that looks to be a thinker shaft. He said it has Kevlar clutches, and I believe he said something about the drums. He told me the person he bought it from had around $1000 in the transmission and wound up selling it for about $500 for reasons I don't know.

I don't know what to do because for $400 I have a trans that should be stronger than my stock one for the blower motor in looking to build, but I didn't build it do I don't know exactly what's in it and what it is good for.

Is $400 a good price for and upgraded transmission anyway?

I would pay 400 for a fresh rebuilt STOCK TH350 if i knew it was a good source, but you never know what you are getting. The only way to really know is to have a trans shop pull it apart and check for good quality aftermarket parts. No stock rebuild will handle 800 HP so there should be some good stuff in there.

You will have to pay the shop a little for this but if you find it does indeed have good internals its still a great deal. You might even be able to get the seller to agree if it has good parts you will buy it but if not he has to take it back...

Ok I like this idea. I will have to find a trans shop around me since the one right by my house closed like 3 weeks ago but maybe I can convince him to that deal. But I also thought 400 for even a little better tranny was a good price still.

Any idea what a trans shop will charge to check out a trans?

If you get back with him, have him pull out the input shaft (it pulls straight out) and measure that shaft. Or give me his phone number....Thanks

The place I take mine charges $150 to freshen up a glide unless something is broken.

I have one final question. What kind of money would it take if someone wanted to build a turbo 350 to withstand 800hp or even 600hp. This tranny is suppose to have $1000 in it.

If you want a glide my friend has one that could use freshened up (he took it apart) that he would likely give you. He is here in maryland so not TOO far of a drive.

Here Jake is one of the best in the business. His stage II he rates at 750hp/tq and he charges $1400 for it and he stands behind his units if you ever have a problem.

That's cheaper than other people I have seen. I wonder if he will just sell the parts he puts in it because I see he sells kits for a stage 1. I really hate to buy another transmission to have mine sit around now. I rather just rebuild mine.
