I have a 350 engine in the car, the previous owner installed bolt on parts such as Holley Street Dominator intake to a quadrajet, headers to dual Flowmasters. I installed a PN 8360 MSD Distributor. Other than that the engine is completly stock. Heads are stock, internal parts are stock as far as I know. I want to put a cam kit to get more power (speed). I was talking to a mechanic he adviced me to install a thumpr cam, But from what I have read this cam is for sound and not speed. Any suggestions on what type of cam kit to install? I do not have an automatic tranny, its stick! Clutch advice would be very much appreciated also, I dont know wether its M20 or M21 but I know its a muncie! Im assuming its M21because when I shift the gears are close, its just my assumption.

i honestly would recommend the comp cams xtreme energy cam, they have lots to choose from, they are a dual profile cam, and give you great throttle response and alot of vacuum, that is the cam im running in my 383 with some aluminum heads, and i literally burnout yesterday down an entire block in 1st 2nd and 3 gear lol. it and that thing is touchy, i was litterally only a litte over 1/4 down on the throttle the whole time. it has a decent idle to it also, an xtreme engery would be good in a 350, as far as tranny, i dont know a whole lot about manual so ill leave that to another member
Need more engine info, head casting numbers and suffix code from block deck for starters.
See that u have a stick shift, u can run any cam that u want. What's the rest of the plans for the motor, is everything else going to stay the same just cam change?

Can't just throw any cam in it!
If your new to the game and on a buget I think you should get a cam,carb./intake kit or even a whole top end kit like a performer or something summit puts together.

forgive me for my ignorance I know what a casting #'s are, what is suffix code? When I get home I will run the # on the block!

My plan is to invest in a cam, just the minimal things until I save up enough money for 383 but in the mean time I do not want my car sluggish either!
For a nice driver and good performance(without going wild), I always liked the Comp Cams .480/280(230)flat hydraulic cam. I prefer running a roller cam these days. Might look at Lunati, don't know what they offer in the same size or pretty close. Doesn't have to have a lot of compression.

that is why I am asking what types are best for a stock engine! my mechanic stated to put a thumpr cam but reading up on it, its not what I want for me, I want to get more horses under the hood!
Save you money on all that, then buy something you really want.
With that being said, dnt waste money on just a cam. Save for what u really want to do like the above post. But if its a must then I would run a comp 274 xtreme energy cam. I used it before and loved it. Might even want to go a step above with the 284xe. Or call isky
Careful -you can't just throw any cam in you want. You're probably not at risk for p-v interference but there are limits on lift, you will need the change the valve springs to match the cam. Also if your heads have press in studs you risk pulling them out with a larger cam so it is good to have screw in studs. That's my advice anyway...

There are many levels of "STOCK" in a 350. Do you mean the original born with motor? What rear gears do you seem to have? (RPM @ 70?) Have you ever checked your cranking compression? You have some good parts but to suggest a cam without additional info is like throwing darts at a target with a blind fold on. I say this because you seem interested in getting a good match for your current set up...Jack
I just looked at the block # 3970010. I assume its completely stock from when I was produced.
Pull a valve cover off and write down the casting number. Then look on front pass side block deck surface , there should be a numbers stamped. Write those down. Post all the numbers.

Deck numbers look like this.

462624 is on the passenger side head as for the stamping number that is pictured I cannot find it there is a ton of gunk on there, could you direct me more towards were this Stamping # is more exact place what would I have to take off to get to it. picture would be very helpful, the engine is still in the car and it runs FYI! I hpoe im not annoying anyone with my ignorance!
