is it worth the trouble of rebuilding he powerglide in my 63 ss?
or should i replace it with a 400 or a 700r4 when i do my v8 swap?
i know i will lose the cool shift pattern the powerglide has in it now.but i am looking to build around 400 horse power in my new v8 and would like a trans that can handel the power.
if the original power glide can handel it if properly built let me know.

i would like to hear what you guys have to say about this

powerglide...

If this was an original resto...i would say redo the glide, but since you are stepping up the motor, why not get a better trans. A TH350 would be an easy swap or one of the later model OD types...there are lots of kits and parts to work with either type of tranny. You don't need the TH400 for a car like this. Your driving habits and rear end gears will also help in the decision...the OD trannys are really great for cruising.

A powerglide can easily be built to handle that kind of power. A turbo 350 would probably be quicker in a car with that kind of power and weight if that matters to you. I run a glide and am happy with it. It also helps with the traction issue as it is a higher low gear.

i guess i should have put a little more info.i will not be restoring the car to originalso i dont care about keeping the original stuff in the car.besides i can sell the original stuff to others that are looking to restore to original.

i am not building a show car that has to be trailered to all its car shows.i want to build a show car quality car that will be driven.my job is only 4 miles away from my home and i will drive it there at least once a week.

i am not building an all out race car for the 1/4 mile strip.but would be nice to take it down the track once in a while and have her hold her own.

but i will be driving it from las vegas to southen california for the car shows.i think it would be nice to be able to take this car on a nice long crusie once in a while.

so the 200R4 is a better fit trans for a nova than the others out there?

If you are planning on putting alot of highway miles on it, I would go with an overdrive tranny. You could still run around a 3.55 gear with the o/d tranny would give you torque and still allow you to cruise at nice rpm.
