i have a powerglide on my '62 and when I'm cruising on the freeway and let off the gas coming to an off ramp, the tranny automatically downshifts way too early. Right around 40mph, and the rpms shoot way up to around 4500rpm. it does it occasioanally around town too. Not only is this very hard on the engine, it's extremely annoying too. Is there a way to adjust this?

ok....let me rephrase the question. Can anyone explain how the powerglide shifting works? both up shifting and down shifting.

sounds like something is sticking, like a valve, if it has allways done this check to make sure your vacume line is hooked up and in good shape, ive never adjusted mine but the th350's have a screw on the side of the case that you can adjust that with, dont know on the glides would hafta look on mine to see.

First check your vacuum line at modulator (under car at Left rear of trans 3" hose could swell and cause a vacuum leak )
Then check all your lines at carburator.

you did not mention if you have a 6 or an 8 cyl?

A sticky Governor will also give you this symptom.

Has any work been done to car recently?

has it sat stored for years and now just run?

What color does the fluid look?

where is the fluid level?
