I just stumbled into a 74 hatch back with 79000 miles on it ac still charged. It has been sitting along time now im trying to start it but the points want fire.the points are new,If the coils bad would it make the points not fire? also could really use a wiring diagram on the coil to point an battery hook ups.

the coil could be weak ,,

the coil might be weak from old age. The points remove ground away from the coil to induce a voltage in the secondary windings of the coil to provide a high current to the plugs . Take an ohmeter and go from chassis ground with one test lead and the other to the wire coming out of the distributor that connects to the - coil terminal ( disconected from the coil ) and crank the motor, you should see the meter deflect back and forth as the points " make " and "break" contact. If the condenser has a short or a ground or the points are corroded or wet , or the wire coming from the points has a bad spot in it this will tell.
