I have a 67 4 door....my " Super Sleeper "....looks like Grandmas car...only with 500 HP and basically a (drag) street car....After 3 years I am getting close to the finish line and have to decide on fresh paintjob or leaving it as is. Lately I have had many people telling me to leave it as is....adds to the "sleeper" status....your opinions ??

I'm not a fan of the "patina" movement and I don't think worn, chipped, and faded paint is anything but worn, chipped, and faded paint. Treat the rusty spots and leave it alone if you want to keep it a fun, worry-free driver. I think it is more useable without a new super-slick paint job. Shell out $10k-$20k for new bodywork/paint and it will stay in the garage under a cover.

Paint but just an inexpensive job. If you sink the 10-20k it would take a body shop to get that perfect, you will never get it back from a 4 door.

I know guys, if they see a rain cloud 50 miles away they book it home…each to there own. Me, i will not purposely drive it in the rain, but if i get caught in it… just means more clean up.
I try to avoid it too but mine gets rained on sometimes. It's Florida, it's my only car and rain comes out of nowhwere in the summer.

I like ‘‘em both ways. Cool looking worn original paint tells a story of survival and I dig that.. I like shiny too but not every car needs to be .. My 64 was painted long before I got ahold of and it looked “ok” from a distance but it was a $hitty shiny paint job that lacked proper body work prior to the application of the paint. If you looked down the driver side quarter panel it was wavy gravy which was annoying. If you didn’t know any better one might think it was patina.. The top side had a lot of fade and ware..

Some of your decision should be cost and time also. If you can do the work yourself and have the time and enjoy that stuff paint it. A four door will never be worth big money as you know.

Some closer up pictures of the rust spots might help us on deciding. Or you could try and address the rust spots with some type of protection to slow down the spread of rust. Maybe even use some touch up paint.

I would say get it on the road, gets the bugs out of it, enjoy it and then you can also shop around for a paint job deciding on how much you want to spend.
The last thing you want is for your car to be in paint jail for a long time instead of enjoying it.
Some of the stories I hear locally and on this site make me sick for those people...
oh- and very cool car!

I know people like that, they will not take their car out if they see rain clouds that are miles away. Who cares if it gets rained on like you said a little more clean up time.

I love it just the way it is! Super Sleeper status. It's not so much patina that it's in its original form from day one, showing life lived (except under the hood and pan.. LOL). I'm not a big fan of telling others what to do unless you're my kid so, if it were mine, I'd leave it and grab another 2-door to build to perfection. Then you can have the best of both worlds... and you can likely pick up a 2-door for what you'd spend on a real paint job... then have two!! :) it's a win-win in my book!!
