I recently started cleaning my axles and found there was some sort of brownish orange looking paint along the shafts on both of them. I wire brushed them and removed the paint and then as an afterthought, I got to thinking that I may have made a mistake. Does anyone know if this paint is essential to keep the axles from rusting after being installed inside the differential?

OK, followup...... Got a message from JBimmolate (Miles) and he said "No, some have paint some don't all aftermarket axles have no paint. They will be just fine.

So now I'm feeling better about taking the paint off.

Taking the differential to the shop tomorrow to have it rebuilt with a 3:36 R&P and Eaton Posi. Now all I have left to do is "the rest of the car"!
