hi, i just recently replaced the old stock 307 with a 327 that i have built up. the engine should be good for 9:1 compression and hopefully 300 horse. now the problem is that i still have the stock converter and rear gears which i know is a problem but like alot of people money is tight..especially since im still in high school. now i will be able to scounge up enough money soon for a converter and gears but am having trouble on knowing which one I should get. any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

ya but my stock stall converter is rated at 14oo and my cam is ranged at 2000-5000. im thinking maybe a 2400 or 2600 with 373 gears. sound good? and any tips on a good converter.

I think you are a good path thinking about the stall speed. The stocker is bogging you down. So its prolly a 3000-3400lbs car? Im thinking if yer doing it make sure its got a high enough stall. The 327 isint a torque monster but winds up quick to the peak hp. Im thinking of a 3000 stall. TCI makes some decent stuff for a good price. B&M not too bad. JR

Just go get some low gears and be done with it (something like 342's or 353's)....... don't worry about the converter. Had the same problem in HS, 283 sb w/ 273's and a TH350, what a dog off the line.

your thinking is in the right direction , but from experiance a 2500 converter will do nothing for you . I feel that a 327 will start to benefit from a minimum of 3000 stall . The engine doesnt make a lotof low end torque and most converters are rated for more torque than you are making ,so step up if you want a converter to work .

Again you really just need gears .

converter

Sure a gear will help here , but a converter is going to free up the engine to build some RPM before it places the laod of the car to the engine. Way back in the day , a friend and I put a Vega converter in his car and what a converter can do has made a believer in me ever since. Really the car needs both converter and gear but a higher stall won't effect the day to day use of the car near as a 410 gear or so will. Sadly , a 327 really needs alot of gear and converter to do great. Its gonna be tough to be satisfied with a 327 nowdays. If i wanted a real bruiser on the street , I think i'd start saving for a 383 or 406 and ride the 327 while building parts.

I like small motors myself for the strip but the amount of gear, converter and gas they need can hurt a young guys pocket book. I was reading today about a stock 406 short block with stock Vortec heads and a very mild [email protected]/114 LSA cam made over 500 ft blbs of torque and 427 hp all before 5800 RPM . A combo like would make anybody smile running 308 gears and a 2500 converter for a street car.

well thanks guys but im kinda stuck with that engine for awhile. especially since it doesnt even have 50 miles on the rebuild. ya my buddy that helped put it in has a 383 that we put in his '68 camaro and i drove that before i drove my car and i guess i was stuck that my car was going to have as much get-up-and-go that his camaro has and was a little disappointed when it didn't.

I would go with a 2400-2600 stall and 3.73 gears. Good combo that will be drivable and won't develop to much heat.

What gear ratio do you have now? I had a similar cam in a mild 350 and when I added a 2500 stall it woke right up with the stock 3.08 peg leg rear. With that combo it would run 13.6's at 102. I then added a 3.90 posi and it only picked up a 10th with traction as the problem.

My personal opinion , having a 327 that doesn't see the high side of 7500 is like having sex with Dolly Pardon wearing a bra.

Nothing wrong having sex with dolly parton wearing a bra. Fun part is watching her ya ya's pop out when the bra comes off!!!

i have 273 gears right now. but i got lucky in that i have a 8.5" rear end. that bad part is i still have the mono leafs so i imagine i will see some bad wheel hop if i try to launch hard with a higher stall and lower gears

GEEZ , 2.73 gears !! a topfueler would have a hard time smokin the tires ! But seriously GET some gears , and dont worry about wheelhop UNTIL it happens ! and i personally have gone 11s with single leaf and junk slapper bars . And i know a guy that has gone 9s with single leaf .

I ran a 283 in my car for years and was in the same boat as you. Everyone told me to put gears in it to fix my problem, so I did. Gears was a waste of money at the time since it did not pick up my performance beyone a couple hundreths in the 1/8th. I ended up putting a TCI Street Fighter converter which stalled around 3200 and picked up .9 in the 1/8th over a 2200 converter.

get ya some good ol' traction bars and you'll be fine. I bet there might be some sitting around the garage of some of these guys' that now use caltracs. Don't get the kind that clamp to the spring , look around and get the ones that replace the bracket under the leaf spring and lower shock mount. I always used regular U bolts not the j bolts as pictured below.
