Need confirmation on 10 bolt....

Hey guys, I'm pretty sure it's a stock 8.2 10 bolt but the diff cover is throwing me off. All the charts I see doesn't show this weird looking cover. It's in my 66' hardtop I just picked up. Any help is appreciated!

Looks like an 8.2 from here. I think Big Al posted up pics up the 10 bolt before and the 8.5 has a flat lug on the bottom of both sides when looking at it from the back. The 8.2 takes a 1 1/8" socket on the pinion nut and the 8.5 takes an 1 1/4" on the pinion nut.
It looks like a 8.2

Don't underestimate that little 8.2. I know for a fact as I built my last one and hammered it hard for 6 years in an 11.60 quarter mile 71 Nova. Wouldn't put a transbrake or standard trans. behind it, but for a foot brake street-strip car I would do it again if need be. Aftermarket Eaton posi and Richmond gears. Luckily though I have a 72 which of course came with the 8.5.

Yea, I hear you. Unfortunately if I'm going to put any money towards a rear end it's going to be an 8.5. I have the 'do it once do it right' mentality.
Been beating on a 8.2" for years (9+) and haven't broken it yet. 400 sbc, Turbo 350 w/shift kit, 235/60/15 tire. Upgraded to aftermarket axles and rebuilt the posi. If I were running Caltracs at the strip I might have hurt it by now.

I hear you, I am the same. Once I build them I drive the snot out of them and drive them anywhere I want to go. I don't work on the drivetrain once I do them and I don't open the hood except to detail. Built 5 of these 3rd gens.:yes::yes:

A guy at the track tried to sell me a 12 bolt for $1400, he said as soon as I put the slicks on my 8.2 it would break. Told him nope had the slicks on it many times running 11.60s and pulling the front tires maybe 2 inches. Then when I told him I put the Eaton and Richmond in it he said no wonder with the good parts. I even had stock axles in it with those parts.
