Most of the time, I see those things tucked up under the fender sort of... At least for some reason I'm thinking that I have haha. I don't think it would be to hard to do, and it would be hidden and should be able to work at any angle considering the ones on G-body cars are mounted upright...(opposite of how yours is)

The vaccum resorvoir is what basicly allows your vent doors to close and open, consistently and on command, inside your heater box. Some cars are cable operated like the first gen chevy ii and some cars are vaccum like the pic you posted. And there are also some vent doors controlled entirely by electric.
