hi everyone I am fairly new to auto mechanics and I just bought a 62 nova with a column **** that doesn't lock into any of the positions, it shifts into all the gears but if i bump it gently, it will shift into another gear. I took the steering column apart but can't see the problem. I assumed it was missing a spring but not sure. any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like a shift linkage problem to me. Possibly the spacers and grommets (if so equipped) are worn and need to be replaced, and the linkage adjusted. I had a similar problem on my 71, and it turned out the grommets on the levers on the transmission were totally shot. I replaced them, and once adjusted, the car shifts like it did when it was new. Look at the transmission section of the Factory Assembly Manual for your car. Once adjusted, there should be almost no play or slop. If the parts are worn or missing, they need to be replaced.

Good luck.
