I used the same epoxy primer too. I ended up using the drill mixer to get the epoxy itself mixed before adding the activator to small batches. Seemed pretty thin at that point. I know what you are talking about with the coverage. Your work will show through on the first coat and even the second if sprayed the same day. If you let the first coat set for about 2 weeks then scuff it and lay a 2nd coat it will cover. I have no experience either but this is what I noticed on my first adventure into painting.
Hey Mark,

Did you notice the color of the epoxy activator to be weird? That is still bugging me. I haven't called Eastwood yet, just trying to figure out if it supposed to be clear, like I expect, or if it is supposed to be oddly tinted brown/yellowish. Thanks.

Yes, mine was brownish............ I had a bit of a flash back and I want to edit my response. I used mine pretty much as soon as I got it and I'm sure the activator was clear. That was when I just did the body. Later when I got on the doors, fenders, lids I did notice it was brown but kept going with no worry. It was as clear as some good corn liquor I remember for sure. With that last comment you may not believe my response. In my case I think the, after opening, shelf life caught up with it and it went brown.

lol - I did call Eastwood yesterday and they said that the yellow/brown color was normal. I personally think its from a reaction with the metal can its shipped in. Probably more Chinese garbage. Lucky I've got enough to paint a barge.

If it happened after you opened it, it's likely oxidation from the fresh air entering the can. Those chemicals are quite reactive as they are a catalyst and are O2 active. May just be what happens to the stuff regardless due to aging out although if the efficacy of the chemicals used in the catalytic action are still present in their original content, they should work as intended, albeit a strange color... I have plenty of household and automotive/machine chemicals made right here in the good ol' USA that change color after a while... Still work... Just chemistry... :p Let's just hope whatever the case is the end result is your final clear coat stays perfect!! :)

I use Southern Polyurethanes epoxy and there activator does the same thing. I believe Andy is correct with his reasoning. I know every gallon of activator I have purchased from them say 1yr shelf life after opening. 2 or 3yr unopened. I can say I have used some 2yrs old and fairly Carmel color and seemed to work ok. I keep all my paint supplies in the house so they are 70 deg year round I think that helps alot.

Sorry for the confusion, a few pages ago @Allbizns posted some pics of a 69 Camaro he had just painted. It was maybe a month ago. I was checking back with him to see if he had gotten it back together yet. The car looked amazing on the rotisserie in paint.

Got the seats primed, painted and back together. Primed with the gun plus used the Preval sprayer to touch up. I ended up painting with the Preval alone which worked out better given the space constraints. I also trimmed down the oem recline levers. My replacement foam cushion showed up today so these things can go to the seat shop now. The moment of truth approaches. Any guesses what the quote is going to be for custom covers plus a little foam work?

I did find an old drop cloth to drape over the car which was nice. The order of the pictures is out of my control. I’m too damn lazy to select and drop them one at a time. Would be nice if the attachment editor gave the option to move them. Just a suggestion for the admin folks.

Just got off the phone with the seat shop. They can't take them in till next month...on to the next thing. Exterior seam sealing, front sub-frame paint and wheel stand fabrication. Probably not in that order. Oh yeah, one more thing - figure out how to make more room in my garage. There may be a storage unit in my future. My rotisserie has nowhere to live once the car comes off of it and I'm struggling with the thought of selling it. I really need a bigger shop.
