So I got my orders, I'm going to be a an Army Recruiter in N. Phily, not going to lie, not really excited about the area...

I have never been east of the Mississippi, besides a few months at Ft. Benning for 11B OSUT. This should be an enlightening experience! I have a '68 Chevy II, looking to meet up with other Nova enthusiasts!

I've never lived on my own as an adult, always had government housing! How do you find a good rental, in the area (around Cottman Ave) where I am not going to make the news for shooting a home invader?

I thank you for all your guys help! I am looking forward to meeting new people!

I strongly recommend to live about 20 mins north of north phily. Is a very easy ride. Levittown would be a good choice to live in.
If you are looking for a place to rent or buy, you may want to start at the below link if you do not already have a real estate agent.

There are other sites similar that can assist you in your search.

Good luck with your search and thank you for your service to the greatest country on earth!

I agree, Philadelphia is surrounded by suburbs that are nice and quiet. Not to say Philly doesnt have nice areas but they will cost an arm and a leg. If your not planning on driving to work, The whole area has a very good transit system called SEPTA. You can get anywhere in the city or surrounding suburbs once you learn it. You might even consider renting or buying close to a staition for an easier trip. If your diving and have a parking spot at your new job you will just have to deal with normal city traffic. Your not in center city but still a congested area. A place right off of I-95 would make it simple because you could jump off and head right up Cottman Ave. Let me know when you get to town Im south of the city in Delaware County but still not all that far. Dont forget to bring the Nova:yes: Don
I live in Huntingdon Valley and it is close enough to Cottman Ave. The car scene is above average quality. You'll like it.

Yep, I agree. Even some parts of Bensalem can be OK.
Agree with the others, Bensalem or Levittown have a lot of decent apartment complexes. But have some shady sections too, so look arund a bit before you decide where your going to move. But even NE Philly has some decent areas, so don't count that out either.

Philly has a lot of culture. Take advantage of the cheese steaks. Forget Pat and Ginos. The best cheese steak in town is Jim's on South Street. And if your a beer drinker they have a great craft beer scene there and a lot of microbreweries.
Fuzzy,
You are moving to NE Philly (cottman ave) not N Philly. That's a big difference. Welcome to the area!

Just up the road from ya.
Welcome to Philly

Cottman ave is not a bad area, you are not in the inner city. If you are looking for a place along Cottman stay to the west side of the boulvard. There are plenty of nice neighborhoods. I have lived in Glenside all my life, while rent in my area is on the higher end. If you have school age kids you want to stay out of Philly and Cheltenham. Abington township is where you want be, the schools are some of the best in the state. Rockledge is the closest part of abington to the Cottman ave area that is still in Abington. Just did a car sow there on Sunday, it is s very friendly quiet area. If you have a questions about the neighborhoods give me a holler. There are plenty of car shows, cruises and clubs in the area. Most of the car scene closes up in October and gets rolling again in April. If you have any questions at all just shoot me message.
Thanks, Glendside eh? I don't have kids (that I know about!), or a wife!

I'm looking at around $1100-$1200 tops for rent, but that changes with the zip code I looked at a couple and my BAH would be $1449 (E-5 without DEPENDENTS). Can you recommend some apartment complexes? I've almost given up hope finding one with a garage, but I will put my foot down on, in having a washer/dryer in the unit!

I did talk to a guy at The Towers at Wyncote, seemed helpful and had what I was looking for, now just need to find out if the place is worth living at!
As someone mentioned in a previous post, SEPTA is the public tranportation. Not sure how much time you want to put into going back and forth to work, but you can take a SEPTA train down to the Wilmingtom train station and walk to this apt bldg, which has a parking garage ( not as good as a garage, but keeps your car out of the elements and you can cover it too).

They (bpgroup) also have a couple of other bldgs within walking distance of the train station, you could call and see which one would be the least expensive. Also, all of the bldgs are about 5 years old or less.

Wilmington is only about a 30 min drive by car to Philly, might be worth looking into.
The Tower at Wyncote back up against cederbrook, That is cleltenham twp. It's not a bad area but it's not great. It's right up against the city limits. You would be about 5 blocks from Ogontz ave. Not where I would want to live.
one hot im in elkins park man.. we should get together and ride around in the novas....

i can swap army war stories with the new guy here...
just kidding i was in but never deployed ( bummer) anyways...

cedarbrook isnt bad area.. if your by the schools... once you hit ogontz ave or west oaklane.. however... well then may as well move back to north philly...lmao
Well I went with The Towers at Wyncote, it's a nice place, a bit expesive, I had a few issues with the appliances when I first moved in, but the maintenance staff was awesome and quick! Trouble with the place is, I'm white, twenty-six and single. This place would be great, if I was black, but I am not. I apologize if this isn't a "PC," view of the place, but it's how I feel. I plan on moving out the start of the year to somewhere more my style.

I would like to find a rowhouse or whatever they are called, down near Manayunk by the BLVD.
THEY DONE FINALLY KICKED YOU OUT ANOTHER STATE HUH! THERE'S ONLY A FEW STATES LEFT, SOON YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO LAY YOUR HAT ANYWHERE!:eek::eek:
