Malanthius - 1965

Year: 1965

Model: 2 Dr Coupe

Engine: 350

Body/Exterior: GM Atomic Orange

Front End: Heidt's

Transmission: TH350

Rear End: !0 Bolt 3.73 Posi

Exhaust: Dual 2 1/2" Flowmasters 40 Series

Wheels/Tires: Centerline 15'. (For Now)

Interior: Stock

Electrical: Painless

Accessories/Options:

Sound system: Kenwood CD/MP3

Additional Comments: After seeing all of your beautiful cars I figured it's about time I share my build. It's simple and under budget. Just a driver. Just need to get my seats done and little odds and ends.

Day I brought it home. Low milage 350/TH350. Heidt's Subframe. New Posi Rear end and Exaust.

Interior was shall we say, Lacking?

Worst rust was on the front Passenger floor.

But the guy gave me the replacment piece! ;) Learned to weld on this car. Floor, Removed the fuel Cell from the trunk and repaired the hole. Also had to restore the fuel filler because they welded it shut along with the ashtray!

Couldn't afford the kind of paint job I wanted. So tried it myself.
Not to shabby! Good enough for me to cruise around in!

One year working on it on and off. Interior is done except for my seats. Saving up to get them done. Using Stock 68 Nova buckets and the Stock rear seat.

Here's a shot of the interior before the new kick panels and sill plates were installed. Nothing special.

Nice ride :yes::yes::yes:
Looks great! The paint looks great in the pics, but how do you feel about it overall? Just wondering because I was going to do mine, but I'm a little skeptical. Just wondering your pros and cons, especially if this is your first one. Looks like you did some work!

I'm very happy with the paint. I used Matrix paint base and clear. I did color sand it and buff it. That took about a week. A little every night after work and on the weekend. Seemed like it would never end. But the difference is worth it. I hate paying for something I could have done myself. If you are like that you should give it a try!

Honestly and I know the professionals will differ. I just shot it in my garage and threw up some plastic sheeting. Wet the floor to minimize the dust. Yes there was some dust in the paint. But 99% of it was gone after I did the color sanding. I wasn't expecting a show car finish. In one of the pictures you can see my son's VW fastback we restored together. I took that to Oneday paint and spent $1400.00. I spent about $700.00 to paint my car. Thats paint and supplies. And Mine came out way better!

I do have to touch up the roof because of some solvent pop. It was a little cool the day I shot it and I got some trapped solvent up there. Didn't happen anywhere else. Won't be hard to fix though. All in all I'm happy I did it and can't wait to try painting again! If you do it make sure the temps are right. I should have waited for it to warm up more but got ancy and couldn't wait.

For what it's worth. Here is a 1400.00 one day paint job. Single stage. 5 year guarantee. You can see how much better the Nova paint is. Much more Glossy. The color sanding is worth it! Too bad i can't color sand the VW. I'm thinking about shooting clear over it and color sanding. We shall see.

Yes, I like doing as much as I can. I'm going to learn welding for my trunk pan and pass side floor pan. Then, prime. I've never primed or painted, so I want to try. Just want to see how others feel. The more times I see people do it, the more confident I get that I can do it.

And you're right, the nova looks way better.
YOU'VE DONE WELL FOR YOURSELF, ALL YOU CAN DO IS GET BETTER PAINTING!
YOU ARE BOLDER THAN ME :notworthy:

Thanks man! It's amazing what you can do yourself when you have the drive and a small budget! Haha! I really can't wait to paint again. It is pretty satisfying and fun. Once you know you can paint yourself, your projects are that easier and less expensive to complete!
Not sure why the pics aren't coming up for me??? I wanna see your car!!!

I loved the water sanding part of the painting too, nothing like a smooth run of the hand... You did great !!! Considering you did all this in the garage !! Haha, you crazy - watered the ground first, haha, we did that too in HS !!!

Well, applause applause applause !!! Awesome, thank you for sharing your pictures !

Also, LOVE the shaka you got going on \nnn/ in the garage  and btw, nice traps !
