Reading thru a real old issue of Hot Rod, I found an article on a 1st gen where someone swapped the front spindles to the opposite sides and turned them upside down to lower the car slightly. Is this possible? Has anyone ever heard of this, and if so is it safe?

Probably not a good idea. Not only does it change the anchor bolt position from top to bottom, it also moves the steering arms upward. Try shopping at CPP for lowered spindles. I believe they run around $100 for a pair.
