Installing a headliner in a 1970 Nova?

13131 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  lwlevens
I'd like to install a new headliner in my 2 dr 1970 Nova. What sort of project is this? The areas I've wondered the most about is how is it attached at the windshield and rear glass area. My headliner uses the metal rods in it.
Has anyone else done this? Tips?? Tricks??

Thanks John

Time consuming, get lots of those spring clips they sell at staples what have you. And some commercial headliner adhesive. There is a good youtube video by PUI that show a install. Make sure listings are all the same size, may have to trim them. Take your time! Tiny wrinkles will shrink with heat.
There is metal trim screwed into the roof, and the headliner is glued to that, and then the plastic trim is overtop of that, it's all hard to explain, but if you cut out your old headliner you will see what I mean, how to install it all back properly is beyond me, that video helps out a bit though
is the glass in?

if the glass is in it will make it a whole lot harder.

here is a write up that helped me http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=161372

the only thing i would do differently is clip the whole headliner in place with the spring clips then glue it in

oh and when you cut the listings have the bows in the listings and out the bows in the car and then cut the listings to equal length
Thanks for the input everyone. Not sure I can get much use out of the video or not. Being on dial up, videos don't work to well, take forever to load.
Maybe I should get some blue duct tape and fix the tears...... LOL
Any recommendations on where to get a headliner kit for these cars??

You can do it! Just take your time and make it all nice and smooth with the spring clips, then glue it in place.

classic industries is where i got mine, its a good quality and they give you plenty of extra material around the edges. you can get just the headliner or a kit with the headliner, rear sails and sun visors
Ha! try installing a headliner on a nova wagon!:D
Better idea, I strip the headliner out and paint the ceiling blue.....

John
I did 2 of them on my 72's not to bad I learned as I went. Make sure you don't cut the headliner to short where the sail panel go. Just take your time, good luck.
