Installed TH350 in my 1st gen problems

I put a th350 in my 64 6 Cly today and have a few problems.

I used the torque converter that came with the th350, it seems real tight against the flex plate, it's not bowing the flex plate. I could not rotate it easily to get the bolts back in like I could when I was taking the power-glide out. Should I have used the power-glide torque converter. Or do I need another flex plate?

I trimmed the front of the cross member to clear the oil pan like it should. But it seems like the back of the tranny is to high. I can't get the modulator valve back in and the accumulator is right against the floor. Do I need to modify the cross member where it bolts to the rear mount?

the converter should click into the dogs on the front pump in the transmission. once fully seated you'd have to pull the converter slightly to bolt to the flex plate. if the converter is tight to the flex plate & bowing it i'd venture a guess the front pump is damaged...
Sounds like the torque converter is not seated in rhe trans all the way. The powerglide converter will not work in a th350 but there is no reason the 350 converter will not work. Might need to keep trying to rotate in in place, worst case the trans needs to be moved back to seat the converter. Also check the converter hub where it fits in the crank flange sonetime that can cause tightness.

If the vacuum mod is one of the big bulky canisters it will mot fit in a nova tou need to get an aftermarket one possibly
If he has not fired up the engine he should be ok just drop the tranny back loose and reseat the Convertor ... as far as the trans mount the th350 is close in the back but from what you are saying it sounds to close post up some pics for us to look at......
Ryan you beat me to it , if i remember correctly i had some trouble with the th350 install behind my IL6 and had to run my Dremel Tool around the inside of the crank for Convertor Hub to turn free ??
The converter clicked in, it won't go any closer to the tranny, I can look up in there and see it's as far as it will go.
I'm kinda thinking like RickP, the hole in crank is to tight, had a hard time getting PG converter off of it, didn't come off with the tranny like it should. I got it bolted up and it's not bowing the flex plate, so I'm just gonna wait and see.
And the modulator is the big bulking one, I see AutoZone has a smaller one, I think it'll go.
How about the shift linkage? Looks like I could cut it and add about 3" in the middle.
What about the kick down cable, do I really need to hook that up? Gonna be putting a SBC in it next spring.
I'll post some pics tomorrow of the rear of the tranny
Yep i cut the linkage coming from the frame to tranny and lengthed it maybe 3`` then adjusted the rod up top to align the pointer inside .
Its too late now but check the snout on your converter, could be the wrong one, I found this out the hard way, got all rebuilt stuff from local trans shop, they essentially have TC sitting on the shelves, he gave me one that said th350 on the box, put it all in nice and happy, TC would not mate to the flex plate, ripped it all out mean and angry, and there was and the snout was 1/4 inch too long

You are aware that after the first click, you keep pushing/rotating and need to get a second click, then it's fully seated?

Not doubting what you say. Whats the reason you can't usr the PG torque converter?

Wrong input shaft.
Ok long story short that th350 is junk. I got burnt for about $20 plus my labor. Think I'm gonna put the PG back in till I drop a SBC in it.
Would I not have problems anyhow putting a V8 torque converter against a L6?

Ran my th350 behind my ole 194 for a year or so before i swapped in my 355 ..
Got the PG back in and it's shifting like a new one now. I changed the filter, new fluild and cleaned the govenor and put in a bottle of Trans-x. Don't know which one done it, maybe a combination of all, but it's like a different car now. Might just try it behind that SBC now.

Kinda' late in posting this, but I used the TH350 shift linkage assembly with all related brackets and hardware from a common 73-87 chevy C-10 truck. In case anyone is doing this swap and wants to know what will work..

I put a TH350 behind my L6 with no problems. It was removed from a 350 V8 in a 55 chevy. I had no problems with the converter fitting.
