how much torque and hp can a 700r4 be built to take?
or is a th400 a better trans for high power/tq?

The actuall casing is the weak spot they max out at about 550 ft/lbs then they break.400 th is much stronger,but you loose OD.

it depends on how much you want to spend on the trans. i know one company that will build it and it will handle 700-800HP. but you will spend about 2grand on it.. check this site out, ive used there trans in a 4x4 i had. it ran a 468 that dyno'd at 525 [email protected] and i towed my show car with it and horse trailors in overdrive and never had a problem!

the motor is going to put out close to 6oo fpt so i guess i'll look for a th400.$2000 is alot for the trans. thanks for the replies.
