Help with engine problems

867 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  65 SS
Went for a drive last week and it started running really rough. Got back to the house and the car stalled. I raised the idle speed to keep it running, and it is running rough and doesn't sound right. Oil pressure is good, no leaks, plugs look ok.

Any ideas on where to start?

Engine is 383, demon 750 carb, Petronixs distributor/coil, mechanical fuel pump.

Thanks, kent

new or ancient gas tank & sender assy?

if it's old stuff possible the sender sock is clogging/clogged up, dirtying up the carb... once shut down a lot of debris may fall away from sock... maybe not.

unsure if this helps...
Fuel tank is a 15 gallon summit fuel cell with baffles and foam.

I'll stay with the Flyers train of thought. Hows your fuel pressure?

Fuel filter clogged?
FUEL! What fuel are you using. I live in Michigan and our 93 octane has been causing all kinds of problems. Come to find out, it's 25-30% ethanol. Ethanol causes all kinds of problems with the conventional fuel systems. I took my bowls off when the car was running like crap and the inside of the bowls had this white residue all over everything. While cleaning the entire carb out, the needle and seat had build up on them, and there were little chunks of that white junk in about every passage in the carb. Did a total rebuild and solved the rough running issue. Still have the crap fuel so I did some checking around and found this stuff called StarTron Ethanol stabilizer. I've been using that since the rebuild (about 3000 miles) and no build up in the carb. Give it a try, but use the Marine grade, it works the best.
