why should i have to get a chip for my mom's '89 suburban to use headers and dual exhaust? the computer doesn't control the engine on that year....does it? i thought it justed controlled the tranny and egr....

I have a 1989 GMC Jimmy and it is computer controlled throttle body 4.3

A 1989 Suburban has TBI same as the pickups. YOu can use any 73-87 headers and exhaust kits, you just have to leinghten the O2 sensor wire and weld in a bung for it. I did some reading on changeing to a three wire heated O2 sensor seems to be the way to go. The computer controls the engine and the tranny converter lock up. On the wifes Suburban (88 3/4 ton) I left the stock manifols and ran a single 3" pipe into a Magnaflow muffler with duel 2 1/2 tail pipes that exit behind the rear wheels, kinda loud though, but gave me alot more power.
