When I removed my old head bolts, they did not have washers, but it seems most head bolt kits say they require washers.

Are washers needed on iron heads?

Also, does anyone have the head bolt torque spec or sequence for a BBC? What to people use for thread sealant?

Stock head bolts use NO washers..... tightening sequence.. start in the middle and move out equally forward and aft...

Main cap bolt, 396-427 2-bolt 95 ft.-lbs.
Main cap bolt, 396-454 4-bolt (inner/outer) 110 ft.-lbs.
3/8 in. connecting rod bolt 50 ft.-lbs.
7/16 in. connecting rod bolt 67-73 ft.-lbs.
Cylinder head bolts, long 75 - 80 ft.-lbs.
Cylinder head bolts, short 65-68 ft.-lbs.
Screw-in rocker arm studs 50 ft.-lbs.
Intake manifold bolts (cast iron head) 25 - 30 ft.-lbs.
Oil pump bolt 65 ft.-lbs.
Cam sprocket bolts 20 ft.-lbs.
Harmonic damper bolt 85 ft.-lbs.
Flywheel/Flexplate bolts 60 ft.-lbs.

For thread sealent.....

I Take a firm stand on Peratex #2.. NON harding gasket maker...... Permatex UltraBlack RTV is good as well.

#2 Permatex HAS never FAILED me...

Veno, that old permatex #2 non hardening sealer has been a favorite of mine for years. I use it on intakes all the time as it's more fuel resistant than any silicone type sealer. Also on head bolt threads and the non hardening feature is a plus here because I retorque my heads a few times.
