Hi everyone, any ideas how to keep the engine from turning while trying to remove balancer, 396 w/automatic already tryed putting car in drive with no luck.

Harley, try a wrench on one of the convertor bolts. Rotate the engine until the wrench is up against the bellhousing. As long as you don't get crazy with the balancer puller, there should not be enough force to cause any damage to the bolt, wrench or the bellhousing.

You might also try a vice grip locking plier on the flex plate and let it jam against the bellhousing to keep the crank from rotating. Just dont clamp it on the teeth and damage them.

I used a breaker bar and a soft faced mallet and wacked it to loosen the balancer. Worked good for me.

You can put a 1/4" bolt thru one of the other holes in the balancer and turn it until it hits the block.That will hold it assuming your going to torque to 65-70Ft lbs
